DION BAIA – His cinema studies started at a very young age, when plopped in front of the TV, Dion was exposed to both contemporary films and the Dion BaiaHollywood Golden Age alike, mixed with healthy doses of 80’s action, B-movie shlock, and old school horror. By about age 8, Dion was already prepping for SaturdaySleepovers by getting his parents to allow him to host sleepovers, while sometimes testing the bounds of his mother and father’s sanity by at times having 2+ friends over for a night. This is where his tutelage of what we now commonly refer to as ‘binge-watching’ was born; staying up all night long to watch as many movies as his folks would allow him to rent. That is until 1991 came along and the addition of a video camera to the Baia household changed everything. Dion went from watching movies to making them with his friends- be it SNL parodies or straight up homages to their favorites films of the day. He went on to study cinema at the Conservatory of Film at Purchase College where, as fate would have it, he was paired with J. Blake (who was also a film major) on day-one to be roommates. This sparked a lifelong friendship which has now rivaled in years, the age they were when they first met- Confused yet ? Dion has been in the television industry, specifically cable news on the tech-side since 2002, being the veteran of over 3 presidential election cycles. Since 2011, he has been a regular on-camera television guest, popping up oddly as comic relief and in panel formats to opine about the news of the day. He is also a seasoned podcaster, at one point cohosting 3 shows at a time. So sit back and listen to this self-stylized student of history, music, and film as he and his best bud opine about the greatest, most well-respected, and some of the hokiest movies of our time. And also, Dion’s new debut novel, a 1976 crime thriller / police procedural named Blood in the Streets which is available on Amazon for preorder, releases December 4th, 2018. It will also be available in ebook formats and as an audiobook.

(Please check out Dion Baia on Friday’s on Fox News Channel at 4pm on Your World, with Neil Cavuto.)

J. BLAKE –  Blake Bio PicLike his esteemed colleague Dion, J. Blake’s love affair with the Lady Cinema began at a very young age…with one of his earliest memories being the sight of Yoda’s swamp-covered planet of Dagobah projected on to the big screen.  Video stores and the films viewed at weekly mischief-filled sleepovers were a very important part of this aspiring artist’s upbringing and are two of the leading factors that led to his decision to go to film school; where he met and shared a dorm room with the incomparable Dion Baia.  J. Blake’s post-film school years have been filled with adventure and intrigue as he is a man that has worn and continues to wear many hats.  For several years he taught film studies courses, focusing on the horror and comedy genres, at Dion’s and his Alma mater.  As a writer and film and music authority, he has had articles, interviews and reviews published by many noteworthy music and genre film-related publications, including Fangoria.com, Dreadcentral.com, Video Watchdog Magazine and MovieMaker Magazine; and he has been a featured guest of such notable podcasts as F This Movie, Wrong Reel, Filmwax Radio, Damn Fine Cast, Hellbent For Horror and others.  He has been an active member of the film and television industries as both a producer and editor since 2001 and has been a staple on New York City’s music scene for almost as long.  His latest album, When You Coming Home? can be found at all major online digital music retailers and he is a 2015 NY Blues Hall of Fame inductee.  J. Blake has also written a book about horror film music titled Scored to Death: Conversations with some of Horror’s Greatest Composers.

Just started listening thanks to the rec on F this movie. Been catching up with the back catalog. Fantastic job fellas, having a lot of fun listening to my childhood come back to life. Just listened to Hard Target episode and brought up old memories of the Van Damme Seagal rivalry. Have to chime in. This is a quote from Stallone ” But I remember once, at my home in Miami, I believe it was in ’96 or’97, Van Damme was there with Seagal, Willis, Schwarzenegger, Shaquille O’Neal, Don Johnson and Madonna… it was a heck of a party. Van Damme was tired of Seagal saying he could kick his ass and went right up to him and offered him the chance to step outside so he could wipe the floor with him, or should I say wipe the backyard with him. Seagal made some excuse and left. His destination was some Ocean Drive nightclub in Miami. Van Damme, who was completely berserk, tracked him down and again offered him a fight, and again Seagal pulled a Houdini. Who would win? I have to say I believe Van Damme was just too strong and Seagal wanted no part of it. That’s just my opinion.” Apparently he goes on to talk about how Van Damme was a kick boxing champion and so Seagal has really never had any professional fights. Yes I’m a 32 year old man looking this shit up. thanks guys!

Thanks so much Danny. So great to hear from you and that’s such a crazy story! We’ll have to track one of them down and get it from the horse’s mouth. Ha! But thank you so much for taking the time to comment, and we’re so glad you like what we’re doing here. Thanks for listening, and hit us up whenever you feel the need. Take care~

I heard about your podcast from the F This Movie podcast, and I was instantly a fan. I think you’re the only New Yorkers podcasting about movies. I just listened to the Willy Wonka podcast, and thought it was funny that you mentioned the only place a candy store like the one in the movie could exist now is in the West Village. ‘Schreibers? Sweet Shop’ opened on Bleecker last spring, and just closed. Even in the village candy stores can’t survive anymore. I just finished the Terminator 2 podcast, and when you guys mentioned the T2 arcade game, I wondered if you have heard of ‘Barcade’ on St. Marks. As implied by the name, they have alcohol and arcade games, including the T2 game. The T-1000 is still impossible to beat. Spent about $20 in quarters with my brother recently trying to do so. Hopefully you guys can save humanity where we have failed. Thanks for the great podcast.

Hey Zach- thanks so much for listening and thank you even more for taking the time and writing us! That really stinks about the Candy Store on Bleeker- that’s unbelievable! And no, I don’t think we’ve heard of Barecade, but it definitely sounds like a place to not only to frequent, but do a podcast from! Ha! But thank you for liking us and listening, and we hope you like what we have coming down the pipeline! 🙂

F This Movie brought me over here too! I have a boring job & I need podcasts to get me throughout the day & I immediately got hooked when I listened to Batman (1989) episode. It was so informative & entertaining & impressed with the amount of homework that went into it. It made this “old geezer” in his mid-30s feel like a kid again.

I was also one of those kids who had Transformers & GIJOE as their top two cartoons. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Thundercats, Robotech, & etc., but I only got the toys for TF & Joe. After listening to the GI JOE & TF The Movie episodes, I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one who thinks GI JOE was way superior to the TF movie. I know Cobra-La gets bashed by the hardcore Joe fans but it was such a fascinating idea that was presented in a kids cartoon. GIJOE The movie was entertaining throughout its entire runtime while the TF movie had a big boring gap in the middle (between Megatron being reformatted & the final battle with Unicron).

It was mentioned during the Terminator podcast, that J. Blake would want to do a Highlander (1968) podcast. I would 2nd that after October scary movie month is over. It’s amazing that a mediocre movie (in my opinion) has turned into such a big franchise. It would take ten hours alone just to talk about the horrible sequels.

    Keep up the great work!

Hey Joe- thanks so much for taking the time to write us! That’s what we like to hear- helping people (feel maybe just for a second), remember the days back when of being a kid, without a care in the world- boy, those were the days! We’re so glad you like the podcast and thank you for listening! And yeah, Highlander would be a great pick, and we’re have to put that on the list to do! Thanks so much! Have a great weekend!

    Hi guys,

Just wanted to say that I am thoroughly enjoying your podcasts and I love the whole “Saturday Sleepover” vibe. Listening to you both talk not only about your memories of the movies but the fun facts and behind the scenes stuff is very entertaining.
The Gremlins cast that you just put up was great and I have a recommendation for you for Christmas time next year – Scrooged. I’ve always thought that it ranks pretty highly up there with his other classics in the Bill Murray Pantheon.
Thanks and keep up the great work!

Hey Kyle- First off, thanks so much for listening, and thank you for taking the time to drop us a line. We’re so glad you’re digging the podcast. Scrooged is definitely a CLASSIC and will certainly be put on the short listen for next year. As we said before, the problem is just so many movies, and sooo little time… Ha. But thank you again for everything, and we hope you have a very Merry Christmas and great New Year! Cheers!

Just had to chime in and say that I am in love with your podcast. I’ve only just found you about a month ago, but I’ve already listened to most of the past casts on my commute and lunch breaks. It really does feel like I’m listening to old friends of mine discuss everything that I love and hold dear. Keep it up, please. You’re really doing good stuff.

    Aw guys….SOOO GOOD!
I just discovered your podcast a few weeks ago!! (thanks to my brother) and I’ve been churning my way through them as i walk the dogs and drive to and from work. I really love your show! I love that you talk movies (and all the research you out in) but equally i love your friendship and history and all the childhood memories that you share! Your general positivity and enthusiasm plus i think your relationship helps because you’re supportive and though you have different likes and “takes” on movies (or maybe BECAUSE you do) you compliment each other in the podcast.
    So enjoyable! GREAT GREAT podcast!!

Hey, 41 year old here. I snuck into RoboCop, Fatal Attraction, Child’s Play… And I grew up just fine! Ha! You guys are great, it’s like listening with friends quoting the same random shit (“You got my Cheese-Wiz, boy?”). I just finished RoboCop, no particular order. Keep up the great work, guys!

    Hey Guys,
Just finished your Blade Runner episode this week, sorry …way behind on podcasts.
It was VERY GOOD! I’m a huge Blade Runner fan… I’ve read Future Noir, I have the movie sets (DVD suitcase edition & bluray) I’ve seen it dozens of times, a few times on the big screen too… BUT you guys had some excellent insights to add, and really got me thinking… particularly all the book comparisons. I’d read “Do Androids…” 20 years or more ago and I didn’t realize how much of it I’d forgotten. Very interesting too, your stories about kids and often their lack of empathy for birds, bugs, animals etc. I hadn’t really thought of that, the fact that these replicants are in many ways like a 4 year old child.
Anyways, well done! I’m listening to your Bullitt episode now, and I just dug out my Bullitt dvd to re-watch it, it’s been years.

Ooooweee… I’m getting that same feeling I got way back in early 1995 when the rumors of Michael Jordan’s return were starting to sound like reality! SNMS is the GOAT of podcasts. Thank you guys for all the years of content. When you went away I was crushed but have just kept re-listening to each episode. It’s honestly the only cast I can repeat countless times. Very excited to hear we may be hearing more from you. Thanks
