Galaxy Quest, 1999
Welcome to another brand new edition of Saturday Night Movie Sleepovers! This week J. Blake and Dion Baia are celebrating a movie that’s turning 20 this year and has become a cult classic for many. The boys are going into space this go-around with the sci-fi comedy epic, Galaxy Quest, from 1999!
Dion and Blake also have named this one the “tangent” episode, as the fellas go off on some left turns, discussing seeing this in the theater together back in the day, what other films they’ve seen together, Star Trek, After School Specials––among other things. They laugh about the layers of comedy within Quest and the brilliant casting and the obvious (and not so obvious) nods to the Star Trek franchise and its fans. It’s a celebration of multiple proportions this week as the boys explore the mysteries of the Thermian’s Omega 13 device in an all new, hilarious and informative installment of Saturday Night Movie Sleepovers!

Hi, first time commentor here. I do have a few suggestions for you guys.
-Can we finally get Twilight Zone: The Movie this year? It’s been teased numerous times in previous episodes.
– Pretty much any Cronenberg film from the 80’s, with the possible exception of Dead Ringers, is ripe for Sleepover material. My personal vote would go towards The Fly since that’s the one that scared the shit out of me. Couldn’t eat donuts, or ice cream for a week after seeing it.
-The Hidden (1987) a great 80’s genre film that I think you guys would enjoy. Imo it feels like a good companion with the original Terminator.
Sorry for the delay! Some fantastic suggestions and all films we’ve talked about doing…and will likely get to, we just don’t know when yet. So many great movies, so little time.

Oh wow! I love Galaxy Quest! And that’s funny because I’m not a Star Trek fan! Let that be a testament to how good this movie is. Sam Rockwell is my favorite part of this movie. His whole “Is there air? You don’t know!” kills me every time. I also love the line “We gotta get out of here before those things kill Guy!” Seeing Kevin McDonald at the end was a nice surprise because my sister and I are HUGE Kids in the Hall fans.
And trust me guys, I know what you mean when it comes to going to the movies these days. I’ve been to a few movies in the past month and I swear there is always someone either checking their phone every few minutes or someone with that annoying blinking notification. Hell, I just saw Glass and the girl next to me pulled out a silver container from Chipotle and proceeded to shovel it into her mouth during the movie…after she took her shoes off, of course. That creeping dread is setting in that people just don’t appreciate the theater experience anymore. Tickets aren’t cheap these days and you’d think people would be more respectful of the movie going experience; you pay this much money to see a movie so why be on the phone the whole time? I’ll be thirty-six in March but jesus these people are turning me into a ranting old man.
Great choice of movie, though! Can’t wait to see what you’ve got in store for us during the new year. If it ain’t Streets of Fire then I hope you guys cover something like The Guest or With Honors…hell, I’d take Atlantis: The Lost Empire at this point!

The current state of seeing movies in theaters is sad, but there are theaters here that are trying to fix at least some of that. The Regal on 42nd street has pretty high wooded partitions in front of each row, which at least blocks the view of some cell phones. But, I will never really understand the shoes off/bringing a whole meal with you to the theater. But that’s me.
